University of Stirling Central Library Refurbishment
Project Description:

The 4 level building contains the campus learning resources with archive and current materials stored on 2 levels. The main level concourse is used as electronic resource area with meeting spaces.  The basement level is used mainly for storage and incoming deliveries of equipment and materials.  The spaces are ventilated and illuminated via exposed services to provide a sense of space that is apparent from the existing low floor to ceiling heights.  A new central atrium is being provided to deliver natural daylight to the centre of the deep plan space.

The project involves the innovative use of the Airthrey Loch to provide free cooling to the library via a water source heat pump. The project was utilised as a pilot project by BRE for the new BREEAM Higher Education scheme.  RSP were the BREEAM assessors.
