| 4MW Biomass Boiler, Wythenshawe Hospital |
|
RSP were appointed by the University Hospital of South
Manchester NHS Foundation Trust as project managers and designers for the refurbishment
of the existing incinerator building within Manchester's Wythenshawe Hospital
and converting the incinerator area into a new Biomass Steam Boiler facility
using locally sourced woodchip.
The work involved two stages of contract. The first was to draw up and detail the existing incinerator plant and provide a full specification for the careful removal and disposal of the plant. In addition a clean up of all contamination within and around the building was required in full accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The second stage involved fitting in very large steam biomass boilers into the existing incinerator area and ensuring the footprint of the woodchip storage and worm feed plant was contained within the space available. A further challenge for the team was to keep the demolition, construction and operation of the old and new plant quiet due to the proximity of the adjacent Acute Ward. The resulting reduction in energy consumption has exceeded the Trust's original target of a 20% reduction between January 2008 and April 2010.
