Plant a tree with Trees4Scotland - August 2010

RSP have had a tree planted in their name by Trees4Scotland through the Green Business Network.

Our tree is located in Teaghlach Wood, near the village of Comrie in the central Highlands. It will help not only to restore the Scottish landscape to the way that nature intended but also help the fight against climate change and the regeneration of wildlife habitats.

All trees planted by Trees4Scotland are varieties native to Scotland such as oak, birch, willow and rowan and they will be establishing permanent woodlands.   Visit http://www.trees4scotland.com/ for more information or to plant a tree of your own.

BREEAM Data Centres - June 2010

RSP are pleased to announce that we are now licensed to carry out BREEAM assessments of data centres under the new BREEAM Data Centres 2010 scheme which replaces the 2008 scheme.

The 2010 Data Centres scheme allows more scope to assess data centres with varying additional facilities and provides environmental weightings related to the level of associated facilities in the building.

Girvan Community Health Centre - June 2010

RSP carried out the mechanical and electrical services design on the recently completed Girvan Community Health Centre.

The design incorporates both a biomass boiler and 100kW wind turbine to reduce the CO2 emissions of the building and achieved a BREEAM rating of Very Good.

BREEAM In Use - May 2010

RSP have recently gained accreditation as BREEAM In-Use auditors.

BREEAM In-Use is the BRE scheme for assessing the environmental performance of existing buildings in use.  It is a self assessment tool which can be used by building managers via an online tool.  The assessment tool enables building managers to see the impact of their building and existing systems and initiatives, as well as the potential impact of any proposed changes.

BREEAM In-Use assessment differs from the established BREEAM schemes in that usually BREEAM assessors undertake an assessment of new buildings and submit the data to BRE Global to review and issue a certificate.  Whereas for BREEAM In-Use the Auditor is trained to verify the data obtained by the building manager and issue the certificate themselves.

RSP can provide the auditing service outlined above and can also assist with completing the online assessment and provide advice on improving the assessment score.

BREEAM Excellent Rating for The Cube - April 2010

RSP carried out both the M&E design and the BREEAM assessment of the building.

New Edinburgh Offices - April 2010

RSP moved into new offices in Edinburgh on the 11th of June 2010. We relocated from our former office at Straiton to Rosewell House, a recently completed office development on Harvest Road, Newbridge.

Rosewell House was designed by Michael Laird Architects and completed in 2009, RSP carried out the M&E design for the project.  The building is situated adjacent to Scotmid's headquarters.

The 5300 sq ft of offices on the top floor of the building were selected after a thorough search of the office market.  The final selection was influenced by the BREEAM Very Good rating, EPC rating of B and excellent links to the airport, motorways and tram infrastructure.

The new accommodation illustrates the practice's commitment to improve our business and minimise the effect on the environment.

Our new contact details are available here.

Feed-In Tariffs - April 2010

The UK Government recently introduced feed-in tariffs for electricity generating, small scale renewable technology installations.

The tariffs are available for PV, wind, hydro, anaerobic digestion and some micro CHP systems installed since July 2009.   For more information, click here.

Scottish Building Regulations Update - April 2010

The Building Standards Division of the Scottish Government have recently announced the forthcoming changes to Section 6 of the Building Regulations.  The changes will come into force on 1st October 2010.

The new regulations include changes to the maximum allowable U-values, system efficiencies, controls packages and maximum specific fan powers.  The most notable changes are the introduction of mandatory air tightness testing and the requirement for all new buildings to achieve a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions from the 2007 Section 6 Standard.

The 30% reduction in CO2 emissions is calculated using the SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model) methodology.  RSP can carry out this calculation at the design stage of projects using the NCM SBEM tool or IES software.  For more information, click here

Scottish Masters Swimming Record - March 2010

RSP Environmental Engineer, Carol Thain, recently set a new Scottish record in Masters Swimming for the 400m Individual Medley in the women's 25-29 years age group.
