World Masters Swimming Championships - July 2012

RSP Engineer Carol Thain recently travelled to Riccione in Italy to compete in the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships. The competition involved 12,197 competitors from all over the world, competing over 14 days in swimming, diving, water polo, synchronised swimming and open water swimming. The competition involved swimmers from age 25 up to 98.

Carol, who was one of 40 Scottish swimmers at the event, competed in 5 individual swimming events and 4 relays as well as the 3km open water swim.

Putting up a strong showing in a tough age group Carol finished in the top 10 in every individual event, including a 7th place in the open water swim, with a top placing of 4th in the 200m Individual Medley.

‘I was very pleased with my performances overall, it was especially nice to swim a personal best in the 200m IM and win my heat! I was a little disappointed that I didn't swim quite as well in the events I normally consider my best ones (800m Free and 400 Individual Medley) but the logistics of the competition took a bit of getting used to and my earlier events suffered a little for that.’

With around 10,000 competitors in the swimming events it took two 10 lane 50m pools, 16 hour days and some tediously advanced marshaling to get through the full Olympic programme of events in 7 days. Predicting what time you were swimming, allowing for busy changing and toilet facilities and getting a sufficient warm up in the 25m pools were all new challenges that had to be worked through on arrival in Riccione.

RSP were pleased to support Carol in competing in Italy.
