2014 News and Updates

Reducing Energy Consumption by 67% - September 2014

Following an operational review and controls upgrade, RSP have been advised that one of our Clients has reduced their annual energy use in one building by 67% and their annual energy consumption over their Scottish Buildings portfolio by an average of 38%.

These savings were achieved by
  • Initial assessment of plant and opportunities for potential savings
  • Determination of controls strategy in conjunction with East Coast Controls to achieve the Clients energy saving target of 25% from HVAC plant.
  • Variable Speed Drives (VSD‘s) being integrated onto all 3PH (400V) pumps and fans and operating at reduced speed as well as modulation throughout the day.
  • BMS software enhancements incorporating system setbacks in line with occupancy demands utilising new CO2 sensors.
  • BMS software enhancements incorporating system setbacks in line with temperature demands utilising new temperature sensors.
  • BMS software enhancements incorporating demand led control of all plant in line with the building environment requirement.
  • Rationalisation of building control zones and timezones to minimise the running of plant.
  • BMS interfacing with packaged A/C equipment to achieve central management, monitoring and control via BMS.
  • The more prominent savings were associated with the reduction in energy consumption by the cooling and ventilation plant due to the Clients 24hour operation and modulating building occupancy.

This shows the importance of thorough commissioning at building handover and the need for ongoing monitoring of system performance.
